Changes

It's been a rough month - thus why I was MIA for a while. Both my husband and I were ill and I developed a horrible cough that left me coughing seemingly non-stop for 3 weeks. I couldn't rest well at night and felt like I couldn't breathe.

I knew then I had a decision to make.

I was diagnosed with the early stages of COPD about 3 years ago (emphysema and bronchitis) but I continued to smoke. Suddenly not being able to breathe easily was a reality check for me.

I have been smoke-free for four days now.

Already I can breathe so much easier....way better than I was even before getting ill! My chest is not rumbling. I am not wheezing. And I am sleeping so much better!

There is no cure for COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), but I am determined now to make positive changes necessary to improve my quality of life.

My daughter and I have started exercising together to keep each other motivated. I want to be active as long as possible. As we are beginning to have slightly warmer days, I've begun doing a little yard work and will incorporate walks into my days. And if I lose some weight in the process, I'd be okay with that!

I am looking to make better food choices. Eat more fish, tuna and lean meats and add more veggies and fruits to our diet.

I am also looking to increase my water intake and (hopefully) learn to love it in the process.

Every year, I need to get three shots - flu, pneumonia, and pertussis. I do not want to end up very sick or in the hospital!

I'm switching to homemade green cleaners because the fumes can bring on COPD exacerbation. And I'm going to have to be more diligent with cleaning - dust and pet dander is not good, nor is excess moisture in the kitchen and bathrooms.

I need to buy a fingertip pulse oximeter to monitor my blood oxygen levels and heart rate. If my blood oxygen level dips below 90% that could be a sign of an oncoming exacerbation - which will likely require antibiotics.

I'm still in the learning stage about this disease, but I'm feeling hopeful that I can live a healthier and productive life.

Don't be like me and neglect your health! Good health is a valuable asset and makes life so much easier while poor health does the opposite.

Be good to yourself. Be good to your body!

Choosing to Love Your Life

I think many people fall into the thinking that one must have a lot of money to create a life they love. They are discontent with where there are now.

The belief is that they cannot be happy until xyz happens, so their happiness is postponed until a future date. And perhaps that goal seems so big and far away to them that they eventually give up and resign themselves to just getting through the day, the week, the month, the year.

It is an easy trap to fall in to. I've been there. And it's at times like those when I am feeling so low and discouraged that I have to remind myself that I don't want to put off happiness because there is joy to be found in the journey.

Life doesn't begin when you arrive at your goal. It is happening every single day!

My big goal is to become debt-free. When I look at that mountain of debt, it's easy to get discouraged and I, sometimes, postpone the simplest things because I feel like it's wrong to have fun when we have 6 figure debt.

But punishing myself is not going to make debt-freedom come any faster. It's certainly not going to make for a happy life.

Attitude makes all the difference! Instead of wallowing in martyrdom, I am choosing to make the best of what I have.

~ I'm clearing out what is no longer useful or beautiful in order to make way for abundance. I refuse to hold on to things in fear of needing it "someday".

~ I'm choosing quality over quantity in every area. Less is more.

~ I'm choosing to be thankful and count my blessings every day. I just started using a 90 day gratitude journal earlier this week.

~ I'm choosing to learn how to do and make things myself - not only to save money but to expand my creativity and skills. I am planning to give more handmade gifts this year, cook more from scratch, and I have a designated baking day each week to make treats for my family.

~ I'm choosing to read more books, watch more movies, listen to more music, craft, garden, sing and bake.

~ I'm choosing to rest when tired, pamper myself with pedicures, facials and hot baths at home, journal, and stretch.

~ I'm choosing to laugh heartily, connect with those I love, and go on adventures as often as possible.

~ I'm choosing to surround myself with positive people, try new things, face my fears head-on, be good to myself and others, and stop being invisible.

I am choosing to create the best darn life I can with what I already have.

And I'm starting today!

Will you join me?

Where I've Been

Hello friends!

January will soon be coming to an end and though we do not get snow in south Alabama it does get mighty cold. I felt the need to step away from the blog for an impromptu sabbatical.

Winter is not an easy time for me. The cold grey days leave me feeling more tired than usual and feeling down. So I hid away in my cocoon. I slept a lot. I pondered many things. And I am easing my way back into the swing of things.

We have been saving money like mad. $251 so far! We have a goal to take a family vacation in April 2017 and it has been highly motivating.

Our youngest daughter, Kenzie, got her driver's permit yesterday.  Exciting for her, scary for me!

Had an unexpected visit with my brother last week for a few hours. That was nice. I don't get to see him nearly enough.

I have been purging clutter and deep cleaning in short bursts.

I have a little hand-sewing project planned. I'll share that in a future post.

I have been looking for ideas for homemade gifts I can make for this Christmas.

I got a tattoo on my foot!

I have 8 or 9 books in the works that I just need to sit down and complete and get them published. I will be making more time for writing this year.

I have been ill the past several days - though I am slowly improving. I do not like being sick at all!! Can't wait until I'm back to my usual self!

What's been going on in your world?

Deep Cleaning and Getting Ready to Redecorate

Once the New Year arrives I am always ready to do a deep clean and declutter. This year is no different.

Instead of starting off the public rooms, this year I started off in the master bathroom, because:

1. the private areas tend to be most neglected and I want to create a peaceful retreat, and...

2. I am getting ready to redecorate the bathroom.

I have a teeny tiny bathroom. It's narrow and long - gallery style. I plan to paint the walls (what little there are) milk chocolate with bright white trim. I'll add the blue & white mosaic shower curtain and white bath mats.

Above the toilet, which is hidden in a little nook, I'll have Alfred add some shelves to store toilet paper, towels and a few decor items. I'll repaint my ghastly gold-framed mirrors and we'll add little shelves next to each to hold our personal care items to keep them off the counter.

So, tell me. When does your desire to Spring Clean kick in? Are you planning any home decor projects?

A New Year

Tomorrow begins a brand new year, ripe with possibilities. How will you be starting off your new year?

Me? I will be clearing out the old...

I will be doing another round of decluttering to get rid of the physical items that are no longer in alignment with my ideal life.

I will be working on mindset shifts to blast through blocks that hold me back.

I will be writing. I have several books in progress that I just need to finish and release out into the world.

I will be mindful with our money as I strive to see our debt decrease and savings increase.

I will become more organized and create more beauty in my daily round at home.

I will laugh more, celebrate small victories, and create memories with my family.

I will be kinder to myself, practice regular self-care, and stop sweating the small stuff.

I will do more things I love just for the enjoyment of it - even if no one else wants to. I matter - and so do you!

Cheers to a New Year....a clean slate to start all over and make dreams a reality!
